About Tesla Energy

Tesla Energy applies the same battery and manufacturing expertise built for the vehicle lineup to stationary storage. Powerwall backs up a single home and shifts its usage to off-peak hours; Megapack does the same job at grid scale, arriving pre-assembled so a utility-scale storage site goes from delivery to grid-connected in weeks rather than years.

Solar Roof closes the loop for residential customers by replacing the roof itself with power-generating tiles, rather than adding panels on top of an existing roof - paired with Powerwall, a home can ride out a multi-day outage on stored sunlight alone.

Mission

Store renewable energy at every scale, from a single garage to a regional grid.

Timeline

How it got here

  1. 2015

    Powerwall unveiled

Introduced home battery backup as a consumer product rather than an industrial or off-grid niche.

  2. 2016

    SolarCity acquired

Brought solar generation in-house, eventually leading to the integrated Solar Roof product.

  3. 2017

    Megapack unveiled

Extended the same battery expertise to utility-scale grid storage, arriving pre-assembled rather than built on-site.

  4. 2021

    First major grid-scale deployments

Multi-hundred-megawatt Megapack installations began firming renewable output for regional grid operators.

  5. 2026

    40+ GWh deployed annualized

Combined Powerwall and Megapack deployments now firm a meaningful share of renewable capacity on served grids.

What defines it

Core pillars

Instant home backup

Powerwall detects an outage and switches a home off-grid in under a second, with no generator or manual transfer switch.

Grid-scale firming

Fleets of Megapacks smooth solar and wind output and absorb demand spikes that would otherwise require a fossil peaker plant.

Integrated solar + storage

Solar Roof and Powerwall are designed to work together from the start, not bolted on as separate systems.

Virtual power plants

Networked home batteries can be aggregated and dispatched together, acting as a distributed grid resource during peak demand.

Safety

How it's kept safe

  • Each Megapack unit isolates and manages its own thermal events independently, without taking the rest of a site offline.
  • Powerwall and Megapack both carry UL certification for residential and utility-scale deployment respectively.
  • Solar Roof tiles carry a Class 4 hail rating and are rated for winds up to 166 mph.
Sustainability

Environmental note

Grid-scale storage lets utilities lean harder on solar and wind by smoothing their variability, reducing reliance on fossil peaker plants that would otherwise cover demand spikes.

Questions

Frequently asked

How many Powerwalls does a home need?+

It depends on the home's usage and backup goals - one unit typically covers essential circuits, while whole-home backup usually calls for two or more stacked units.

Is Megapack sold retail?+

Megapack is priced per unit with configuration options for capacity and site integration - see the product listing below for current pricing.

How long does Solar Roof installation take?+

Typical installation runs 5–7 days depending on roof size and complexity.

Can I bundle Solar Roof with Powerwall?+

Yes - the Solar Roof configurator includes an option to bundle a Powerwall at a combined price.
