The Full Story

About The Boring Company

The Boring Company builds underground Loop transit tunnels, moving passengers point-to-point in Tesla vehicles with no intermediate stops - what would be a 30-minute surface drive during a major event becomes a two-minute tunnel ride. Its own Prufrock boring machines are the other half of the business: purpose-built to cut tunnel construction cost and time well below conventional transit-tunneling methods.

Vegas Loop is the flagship system in operation today, connecting convention center and resort corridor stations, with additional Loop projects underway in other cities as the underlying boring and operations model proves out at larger scale.

Mission

Solve urban traffic congestion by building tunnels.

Timeline

How it got here

  1. 2016

    Founded

Started from the premise that tunnel construction cost, not tunneling technology, was the real barrier to underground transit.

  2. 2018

    First test tunnel

A short test tunnel in Hawthorne, CA validated the basic Loop concept and initial boring approach.

  3. 2021

    Vegas Loop opens

The first operating segment connected Las Vegas Convention Center stations.

  4. 2023

    Resort corridor expansion

Additional stations extended the Loop into the Las Vegas resort corridor.

  5. 2025

    Prufrock-2 speed record

A newer-generation boring machine set an internal record for sustained tunneling speed.

  6. 2026

    104 planned stations

The full planned Vegas Loop network now spans a much larger footprint across the valley.

What defines it

Core pillars

Point-to-point, no stops

Every ride is direct in a dedicated vehicle - no shared shuttle stops along the way, unlike a conventional subway or people-mover.

Prufrock boring machines

Purpose-built tunnel boring machines designed to cut tunneling time and cost well below conventional transit-tunnel construction.

Smaller tunnel diameter

Loop tunnels are sized for single vehicles rather than full subway cars, reducing excavation volume and cost per mile.

All-electric fleet

Every vehicle operating in the tunnels is electric, keeping emissions and ventilation requirements down relative to a mixed fleet.

Safety

How it's kept safe

  • Tunnels carry dedicated fire and life-safety systems, including redundant ventilation.
  • Multiple emergency egress points are built into the tunnel network independent of the normal station entrances.
  • Vehicles currently operate with a human driver at the wheel, not unsupervised autonomy.
Sustainability

Environmental note

An all-electric tunnel fleet avoids the ventilation burden of combustion-engine vehicles underground, and moving trips off the surface reduces surface-level congestion and the idling emissions that come with it.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I ride the Loop?+

Vegas Loop operates like point-to-point rideshare within the tunnel network - riders access it through designated stations rather than hailing a vehicle.

Is it autonomous?+

Not currently - vehicles in the tunnels are human-driven Tesla vehicles, not unsupervised self-driving cars.

What does a ride cost?+

Vegas Loop fares vary by route and event; check current station signage or the operator's fare information for a specific trip.

Which other cities have Loop projects?+

Additional Loop projects are in earlier planning and construction stages beyond Las Vegas as the model scales to new cities.
