The thesis

Optimus is Tesla's general-purpose humanoid robot program, built on the same vision-based autonomy stack used in Tesla vehicles. Early units are deployed inside Tesla's own factories on repetitive material-handling tasks, with production ramping toward external deployment in manufacturing, logistics, and eventually the home.

Milestones
2021

Program announced

A general-purpose humanoid robot program was announced, built on the same vision-based autonomy stack developed for Tesla's vehicles.

2023

First factory pilot deployments

Early units began performing repetitive material-handling tasks inside Tesla's own factories, serving as the first real-world proving ground.

2026

Gen 3 platform introduced

A hand with 22 degrees of freedom brought small-parts assembly capability closer to human-level dexterity for factory tasks.

Optimus Gen 3

Gen 3 runs the same vision-based neural networks trained on Tesla's fleet data, adapted to a bipedal body. Hands with 22 degrees of freedom handle small-parts assembly; the same unit walks a factory floor and, eventually, a living room.
