The thesis

Starship is SpaceX's fully reusable super-heavy-lift launch system, designed to carry crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, and Mars. The program is iterating through flight tests toward routine orbital reentry, in-orbit refueling, and rapid booster and ship reuse, with NASA's Artemis lunar lander among its near-term missions.

Milestones
2019

First full-scale prototype unveiled

An early test article demonstrated the stainless-steel construction approach that would define the program going forward.

2023

First integrated flight test

Super Heavy and Starship flew together for the first time, reaching stage separation before the flight ended early - the first of many iterative test flights.

2024

First successful booster catch

Super Heavy returned to the launch site and was caught by the tower, validating the tower-catch recovery method at full scale.
